Attending to Some Gardening Updates of Our Home

Jan 27, 2012 Author admin

I decided recently that prior to summer coming I would like to update the look of our back yard area. I think with minimal money investment it could be spruced up quite nicely so that the family can spend more time outdoors enjoying the fresh air. One of the first things I need to do is replace the patio pavers as they are looking very old and worn. I did some searching on the internet and discovered a great website that sells paver stones, among other things. They also have a range of fake grass, fire pits, and water features such as fountains. Their range of paving stones is quite vast and judging by the multitude of positive testimonials on their site, they have a great reputation. I am looking forward to doing a little more investigating towards what type of paver would suit our revamped patio area. Now all I have to do is to convince my husband we need new outdoor furniture to go on them.

Why You Should Buy a Cherry Pitter

Jan 24, 2012 Author admin

A few years back I moved into a new house. My neighbor, an avid gardener, quickly became a good friend and was always giving us fresh fruits and veggies. One of my favorite items from him were the fresh picked cherries. He literally gives us about five or ten five gallon buckets full every year. This is all well and good but have you ever pitted that many cherries? It takes forever. After about the third year I told my wife that we needed to by one of those cherry pitters that pit more than one cherry at a time. So the next spring that is exactly what we did. We actually bought two, one for me to use and one for my wife and have been thankful ever since. The new pitters which pit four cherries at once cut our pitting time in half which somehow makes them taste even better. So if love cherries have been considering buying a cherry pitter I highly recommend it. For around $20 you can save yourself a lot of time with your next harvest.

City dwellers see a lot of concrete and steel. Tall buildings block the view of what nature may be surrounding the city. Bonsai trees provide a little bit of nature even in the city. Consider starting a business of growing Bonsai trees and selling them to city dwellers. You could even market your business using such logic as, “A little bit of nature in the city,” or “Bring the forest into your home.” You may find that city dwellers flock to you, because they love the idea of having one of these trees.

Things to Remember when Starting an Indoor Hydroponic Garden

Dec 12, 2011 Author admin

The number one reason why you should consider learning how to make a hydroponic system is because you can grow vegetables and other plants all year round – you don’t have to stop when the weather gets too cold outside. Another huge benefit of indoor hydroponic gardens is the decreased risk of pests, and other ailments, like fungus. The less infection and disease a plant has to fight off, the faster it will grow, and sooner you will see fruits and vegetables. However, one of the most important things you will need to remember when you are building your hydroponic system is that you have to start with quality seeds. They cannot be pre-germinated, and they should always come from a reputable source. Additionally, watch out for the seed packets that are mostly filler instead of seeds. For instance, many retailers will try to fill out the packets with things like crushed walnut seeds.

Gardening in a Greenhouse Effectively

Dec 1, 2011 Author admin

My friend Nancy and I have been gardening enthusiasts for the past nine years or so. We began growing a garden together in between our houses – Nancy is a neighbor of mine, too. We started out small and chose to grow potatoes and cucumbers to help feed our families. We then expanded to more decorative plants that would make our houses look beautiful. Our husbands realized how dedicated and enthusiastic we were about gardening, and they bought us a greenhouse which is located in Nancy’s backyard. We began growing our plants in there and we were so pleased with the results. Nancy came over yesterday and told me she is interested in how to garden in a greenhouse with hydroponics. I had not heard of this before but she said it is a really effective way to garden. We did research online and found lots of information. I am excited to begin doing this.

Does Core Aeration Really Works?

Jul 22, 2011 Author admin

If you have some doubts as to whether core aeration works or not, then just look at the nearest golf course that you can find. Try feasting your eyes on the lush, gree grass and savor the gloriously fresh feeling that comes from the smell of a vibrantly healthy lawn. If you try asking one of the lawn keepers who tend to that golf course, he will reveal to you the secret of his trade, and that secret is known as core aeration.

You see, the soil in your lawn inevitable gets compacted as a result of heavy foot traffic brought on by kids and family pets playing around in your yard, or by passing bikes, trucks and other vehicles. If the soil in your lawn gets compacted, air, water and basic nutrients cannot effectively reach the roots of your grass. Also, when watering your grass, the water will just run off the compacted ground, instead of being absorbed by the soil. Eventually, this will cause your grass to become unhealthy. By aerating your lawn with a core aerator, compacted soil is loosened, as cores or plugs of soil is being pulled out from the ground. In turn, this will allow the oxygen, water and nutrients to become accessible by the grass roots. If you want to have a lawn as beautiful as a golf course, then you now know the secret. Aerate your lawn now!
